The purpose of this course is to delve into the area of meaning. It is two pronged where two aspects of meaning are explored: Semantics and Pragmatics. Semantics deals with meaning of linguistic forms without focus of the context. On the other hand, pragmatics brings humans into its analysis of meaning. The combination of these sub-diciplines is meant to strengthen the study of meaning. It will start by looking at semantics level where morphemes, words and sentences will be studies. Later, real communication contexts will be used as case studies to look at the context, participants and communication in general. As it brings culture into its analysis, it is beneficial for students from different cultural contexts.
