Knowledge of syntax implies ability to form correct sentences. This means one has to know words, their classes, various phrases, clauses and how these can be put together for well formed sentences. Theories of syntax are important so that learners can carry out various analyses. This ability to analyze sentences will eventually lead to communicative competence, which is the main aim of any linguistic study. Various grammatical or syntactic structures will also be explored. To bring life to syntax, we shall explore how it relates to semantics. The study will use the following approaches in its description and analysis: Traditional grammar, structural grammar, Chomsky's transformational generative grammar and X-bar theory.
