Syllabus
The course emphasizes on basic concepts of chemical reactor design and evaluates operational performance of ideal, non-ideal, isothermal, non-isothermal, adiabatic, non-adiabatic of batch and flow reactors for homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions. For batch reactor design, the content addresses how to determine reaction time, size of a reactor and temperature of a reactor to maximize conversion. For PFR and CSTR design, the content describes how to determine average residence time, size of a reactor and temperature of a reactor to maximize conversion. For multiples reactor design, the content accounts how to determine average residence time and the number of tanks in series/ parallel arrangements to maximize conversion. For catalytic reactors design, the discusses the amount of catalyst required, average residence time, pressure drop, fluid velocity required and catalyst activity to maximize conversion. For non-ideal flows and reactor models, the content of the course describes, residence time distribution (RTD) in reactors, axial dispersion model and tanks-in-series model.
