This course offers a rigorous exploration of the principles governing international economic exchange and the strategic role of policy. Students will master foundational theories, from classical comparative advantage and modern trade models to the analysis of trade policies, commercial agreements, and global market structures, building a toolkit to model how nations, firms, and consumers interact within the global economy. A core focus is the critical evaluation of the gains from trade, distributional consequences, and the role of public policy, including interventions related to tariffs, quotas, subsidies, trade agreements, and their impacts on efficiency, growth, income distribution, and national welfare.

The curriculum extends to applied analysis in international trade, examining topics such as trade and economic development, global supply chains, foreign direct investment, and the political economy of trade policy.

Contemporary, pressing issues form a significant component, with dedicated analysis of trade in services, digital trade, the role of multinational corporations, environmental and labor standards in trade, and the dynamics of trade conflicts. Through case studies and problem sets on topics such as policy evaluation, trade negotiation simulations, and the impact of globalization, students will apply theoretical models to analyze real-world economic decisions and their implications for businesses, national economies, and global governance. This comprehensive 6-credit course equips students with the analytical skills for advanced research or professional roles in international economic analysis, trade policy, global consulting, and corporate strategy in a globalized world.
